Calls to Action

Use your voice!  Call your elected representatives and let them know how you want them to vote!  We recommend putting their contact information into your contacts so that you can quickly make these calls.  You only need to call once per issue. Staff track calls so they know if people are calling multiple times on the same issue. Read our blog article on how to call!

WE ARE IN A CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS

The administration has usurped the powers of Congress by illegally freezing funds, declared fake emergencies to grant itself more power, and skirted judicial rulings.

Now, Trump’s brazen defiance of a Supreme Court order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia from a Salvadoran torture prison is truly a watershed moment for our teetering democracy.

Call Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper and your Representative (Republican OR Democrat) and demand they speak out against Trump’s defiance of the Supreme Court, push for an end to these lawless abductions, and move to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home immediately.

Background

Here is what happened to Kilmar Abrego Garcia:

  • The Trump administration has sent over 238 people (likely far more) to a torture prison in El Salvador without due process. Mounting reporting suggests many of these people have no gang affiliation at all, despite the administration’s hollow claims.

  • One of those people was Kilmar Abrego Garcia -- a man who had been granted protected status, prohibiting his deportation by the federal government. The Trump administration deported (kidnapped) him anyway and blamed it on an administrative error.

  • On April 10, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that the Trump administration must facilitate Abrego Garcia’s return.

  • In the days since, the administration has made it clear it does not intend to comply with the Supreme Court’s ruling, ludicrously claiming that it does not have the power to bring him back.

Abrego Garcia’s legally protected status and the resulting court rulings have made his name a rallying cry. But there are many more like him who have been snatched up and sent to the Salvadoran torture prison without due process, and who -- by all accounts -- were ripped away from their families with no real evidence of any wrongdoing. On almost a daily basis, the administration is grabbing legal permanent residents and visa-holders off the streets, obscuring their whereabouts to impede legal challenges, and deporting them merely for exercising their First Amendment-protected right to dissent.

To add to the urgency of this moment, Trump told El Salvador’s dictator this week that he should build new prisons, because the administration hopes to deport American citizens next.

With Trump openly defying a Supreme Court stacked with his own appointees, this crisis will not be resolved through the courts or by adding our name to petitions. The only way forward is massive public pressure. We all have a role to play.

Here is what you can do:

Speak out. We need to help our social networks understand that this is not some abstract threat that has nothing to do with them. If the administration can arrest dissenters, send protected migrants to foreign prisons without due process, and defy the courts, all of our rights are at risk. Have these conversations in person. Post on social media articles that refuse to soften the edges of this crisis or normalize Trump’s actions. Here’s one. Here’s another. And another.

Make your Senators and Representatives feel the heat. Every elected official took an oath to defend the Constitution. This is their moment to put up or face the wrath of their constituents.  Call Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper and your Representative (Republican OR Democrat) and demand they speak out against Trump’s defiance of the Supreme Court, push for an end to these lawless abductions, and move to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home immediately.

If they are not answering or their voicemail is full, you can send them an email and then call back!.

Democrats are in the minority, but not without power. Richard Blumenthal and Brian Schatz are delaying the confirmation of dozens of Trump nominees. Cory Booker used a marathon speech to take control of one of the most important commodities in politics: Public attention. And Chris Van Hollen is currently in El Salvador on a mission to protect Abrego Garcia and demand his return.

Republicans are less likely to speak out against the administration, but they will if they keep getting the kind of blowback we are already seeing at town halls. We can’t let them off the hook here just because we expect so little of them -- we’ve got to make their phones ring off the hook.

Engage in Popular Protests. We have known all along that stopping Trump’s authoritarian takeover is going to take more than calling our members of Congress.  It is going to take mass popular resistance, bringing people together in community to demand change. It’s going to take getting into the streets to defend our democracy.

We did this on April 5 for the Hands Off! Day of Action and we’re going to do this again together for the May Day National Day of Action (stay tuned for more information on this event as well as upcoming weekly opportunities to protest in Northern Colorado). Big, public demonstrations of defiance are opportunities for us to lock arms, get loud, and fight back. Make a plan to participate now -- and among the other chants in defense of our democracy, call for bringing Kilmar Abrego Garcia home.

Tell Our Senators to Vote NO on Bisignano

Our Senators Need To Get A Clue

Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper keep voting to confirm Trump's nominees. This is unacceptable! The nominees deny they are going to break the law, ignore the constitution and steal from Americans. Bennet and Hickenlooper fall for the lies every time and vote “yes.” No surprise to their constituents, after the nominees are confirmed they turn around and do the bidding of Trump and Musk, causing great harm to the environment, veterans, researchers, public health, national security and anything else they can get their hands on.

Our Senators are NOT listening to their constituents and they need to!

This week, the Senate is voting to confirm Frank Bisignano, the nominee for the Commissioner of Social Security. He is refusing to say that he will not shut down the Social Security Administration. We know he will even if our Senators do not, so call Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper and tell them to vote NO!  These nominees will likely get confirmed but our Senators do not need to endorse them.

Why is Chuck Schumer Still the Senate Minority Leader?

Chuck Schumer is still the Senate Minority Leader despite failing to demonstrate the ability to lead in these dark times.  Call our Senators and ask them why Schumer is still Minority Leader and DEMAND that they work for a change in leadership.  We will ask you to call every week until we hear some noise from Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper.

Background

On March 14, ten Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, voted alongside Republicans to allow a continuing resolution to pass that would keep the government open, but make extreme funding cuts to vital programs and give Donald Trump and Elon Musk even more control of federal spending.

After House Democrats (besides Jared Golden) united to reject the CR, most Senate Dems were ready to hold the line and insist on a clean short-term CR instead, that would fund the government while Congress negotiated a funding bill that had safeguards to stop the Trump-Musk coup. Democrats had leverage - 60 votes were needed in the Senate. But then these 10 Democrats caved, giving up their only leverage to not just block the Republican CR but to rein in Trump and Musk. And their surrender was facilitated by Senator Schumer (D - NY).

Government employee unions insisted this bill would be worse than a shutdown for the public services we rely on. Litigators fighting Trump in court insisted the bill would be worse for holding Trump accountable with legal challenges. And while shutdowns cause harm to folks who rely on public services, Republicans proactively said they would immediately undermine the bill if it passed and illegally slash programs and funding. But Schumer ignored these concerns and surrendered, and the bill passed - paving the way for Trump and Musk to continue their power grab. This was a massive betrayal of his party, of Democratic voters, and of our democracy.

The stakes are too high to let this abdication of responsibility slide. Schumer is not driving a real strategy to oppose Trump, so it’s time for a change and for fresh leadership. Democrats need a Minority Leader who is willing to fight back against the Trump-Musk coup, and it’s clear that Schumer isn’t up to the task.

Tell Our Senators to vote against the "Silencing Americans Act"

We MUST Block Republicans from disenfranchising millions of voters with their “Silencing Americans Act."

Last week, the house passed H.R. 22 -- one of the biggest threats to voting rights we have seen in a generation. You may know this bill as the “SAVE Act” but we are calling it by a more accurate title -- the “Silencing Americans Act.” The bill requires voters to show proof of citizenship documents that match their current legal name -- something tens of millions of Americans simply do not have. It would cause massive challenges for married women and trans and nonbinary people who have changed their names, and disproportionately impact people of color.

Call Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper and tell them to do everything in their power to block the passage of this bill.

Background

The GOP calls it the SAVE act, but Indivisible calls it by its more appropriate name: the “Silencing Americans Act”.  The Silencing America Act is a dangerous bill that would create unnecessary obstacles for millions of eligible Americans trying to register to vote. The House passed it last session, but it never made it to the Senate. Now they are bringing it back in an attempt to restrict access to the ballot.

The Silencing Americans Act would require every voter to show proof of citizenship, like a passport or original birth certificate, when registering to vote in federal elections. That might sound simple, but the reality is that millions of eligible voters do not have these documents readily available. Because the bill would require showing this proof in person, it would eliminate online and mail-in voter registration. This bill would not improve election security—it would just make it significantly harder for everyday Americans to vote.

If passed, the Silencing Americans Act would disproportionately impact:

  • Married women who have changed their last names, many of whom don’t have birth certificates matching their legal name

  • Naturalized citizens who could face additional barriers and intimidation

  • Military members, tribal citizens, and working-class Americans, who may not have easy access to these documents

  • And many others!

We have seen the damage of similar laws in states like Kansas and Arizona, where thousands of eligible voters were blocked from registering. Americans without citizenship status are already barred from voting in federal elections, and states have secure systems in place to verify voter eligibility. This bill is unnecessary and serves only to further the Republican goal of disenfranchising voters.

Plan to Visit Lauren Boebert's Staff During April Mobile Office Hours

Lauren Beobert’s staff will be holding Mobile Office Hours in April. Her newsletter states that “staff from Congresswoman Boebert’s office will be available to help constituents who aren’t getting answers from federal agencies, like veterans seeking to get the care they earned from the VA, travelers that need expedited assistance to receive a passport on short notice, taxpayers being harassed by the IRS, and senior citizens having issues with the Social Security Administration or Medicare. Additionally, constituents are invited to come to the office hours to express their viewpoints on legislative issues or request special Congressional Commendations from the Congresswoman recognizing outstanding public achievements.”
