Proposition 127 would make it illegal to hunt or trap mountain lions, bobcats, or lynx. It would allow for the killing of mountain lions and bobcats in defense of personal safety, livestock, and property. It is already illegal to kill lynx, as the species is classified as endangered in Colorado.
Support For proposition 127 is led by Cats Aren’t Trophies, based out of Grand Lake. Cats Aren’t Trophies has celebrity supporters including environmentalist Robert Redford and naturalist Jane Goodall. Supporters argue that killing these animals can leave kittens without mothers and disrupts the predators’ natural place in the ecosystem.
Opponents of the proposition argue that it infringes on the sports peoples’ rights and hurts the Colorado Parks and Wildlife’s ability to use hunting as a means to manage wildlife populations.
